The award-winning department store, Sevens, located on Düsseldorf‘s Königsallee, is an excellent shopping destination, yet affords highly difficult conditions for a conversion project. In the densely built-up inner-city and partially during ongoing operations, RKW gave the department store a makeover – more generous, more modern and even more inviting. For this, the new main portal is framed by white architectural concrete and the glass overhang is removed. The representative portal leads into a two-storey reception whose novel and calmer ambiance becomes instantly apparent. The rental units of the food court in the basement as well as of the retail levels on the ground floor and on the first and second floors will be gutted and replaced by a new layout that caters partly to fewer, and instead, larger tenants. The vertical accessibility is also reorganised: the centred direction of the escalators creates an ease of orientation and greater transparency. The project is mainly defined by an outstanding construction management performance which realised a volume of Euro 25 million at the highest quality in seven months only– and on time for this year‘s holiday shopping season.
